Abstract: A fundamentally new concept in the design of the ice and silt passing facilities was used at Iceland's Burfell Hydroelectric Project. These facilities have operated through one winter season. This operation, while very satisfactory, has nevertheless shown the need of some equipment modifications or demonstrated possible improvements thereto for incorporation into similar designs at other locations. Most of these pertain to the regulating gates - these are discussed. The design philosophy of the facilities is presented, along with means for preventing the sludge ice from reaching the facilities.
