Abstract: In the instance of ice-covered reservoirs in winter time, it is necessary to keep the upstream side of the spillway gates in an ice-free state so as to keep them functional in case of a flood emergency, and a useful measure to this end is to blow air into the water to prevent the surface from forming an ice cover. This paper describes the results of the experiments conducted at a few reservoirs of medium- or small-scale concerning the relation among air temperature, air volume blown and ice-free area width. This study is the first of a series of experiments to be conducted in the future to establish a general rule in this respect.
