Abstract: A 2D width-averaged numerical model has been used to compute the turbidity current of a laboratory model study. A mixture of sand and water was used to increase the fluid density of the current. The numerical model solved the Navier-Stokes equations with the k-epsilon turbulence model to compute the water velocity field. Convection-diffusion equations were used to compute the concentration of sediments in the current. The numerical model predicted a plunging point in the flume and the movement of the current along the bed. The maximum velocity in the current was reasonably well computed, but the height of the current was overpredicted, indicating too large turbulent entrainment from the surrounding water.
