Abstract: Anthropogenic climate change is leading to altered flows due to altered precipitation and ice melt. The effects on vertical slot passes have not yet been researched for the changed conditions that now prevail. This paper attempts to fill this research gap. Therefore, experiments were carried out in order to find out the influence of increasing and decreasing flow in vertical slot passes. The experiments were conducted with a 1:2 (scale) model in a flume in the hydraulic laboratory at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. The measured data were compared with the guideline DWA-M 509. The key findings of the research showed that the increasing and decreasing flow have an impact on the passability of the vertical slot pass for fish according to the DWAM 509. Especially the velocity and the energy dissipation are the negatively influenced parameters.
