Abstract: The objective of this paper is to share lessons for widespread implementation of NBSs for large rivers. We draw from the findings ofa project evaluation of Meusepark Ooijen-Wanssum. In this prize-winning project an integrated approach towards flood safety, economic development, nature and recreation led to the realisation of the reactivation of an old Meuse trajectory and side channels in the floodplains near the villages Ooijen and Wanssum in combination with 20km new embankments, a ring road and port development. Our study shows how spatial quality functioned as a leading element from start to completion of the project fifteen years later. Spatial quality formed a point of departure during project initiation, it was operationalised to support decision making during plan preparation, and it was safeguarded throughout realisation. By doing so, consistency of the plan was maintained and, as a result, a logical and clear basis for collaboration was created amongst project stakeholders. Furthermore, our study has identified 18 specific lessons for the consecutive stages of project initiation, plan preparation and realisation, and puts these in the context of a transition towards widespread implementation of nature-based solutions in riverscapes.
