Abstract: Lake Patzcuaro is considered one of the most important tourist attractions in Mexico. It has been considered a Magical Town of Michoacan since 2002 for its traditions, legends, history, daily life and its celebrations that preserve a true touch of magic. In the basin of Lake Patzcuaro there is the problem of deforestation, change of land use and accumulated sediments for more than 70 years that have caused the loss of a third of the original surface of the lake, reducing its depth by more than 5 meters. This is the reason why the present text addresses the characterization of the area, since knowledge of biodiversity is a fundamental requirement for the adequate planning and management of the territory. This work was carried out by means of documentary information and as a result we have a basis for the evaluation of environmental impact studies.
