Abstract: Emerging contaminants such as microplastics and chemicals or groups of chemicals such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that are detected at very low concentrations in the water environment are of growing global concern. These emerging contaminants may not be routinely monitored by the drinking water suppliers but may have potential to enter into the drinking water supply system and cause known or suspected adverse effects on human health. As an on-going effort to safeguard the quality of drinking water supply, the Water Supplies Department (WSD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) of the People's Republic of China has adopted a holistic approach to manage emerging contaminants with the arrangement of regular review and the introduction of a two-tiered Radar System.
