Experimental Study of Driftwood Deflectors at Fishway Intakes

Abstract: Driftwood at fishways can clog the facility and thus restrict or even prevent fish passage. We present results of an experimental investigation of driftwood deflectors at a lateral fishway intake. The performance of three deflector variants in combination with downflow baffles and floating booms is evaluated for a variety of model driftwood in a 1:5 schematized scale model. Results show that accumulation and intrusion of driftwood is highest for small velocity ratios between main channel and lateral intake. Higher immersion depth of the deflectors reduces the probability of driftwood accumulation. The recommended deflector design consists of three elements and the best result was achieved with the downflow baffle. Accumulation is reduced to a minimum and it is ensured that no tested driftwood enters the fishway.
