Abstract: Precise flowrate measurement in open channels is regarded as the base of inter-basin water transfer and water resources management. Ultrasonic flow meter, which is made based on the transit-time, is one of the most used types of flow meters in open channels. It has good stability and adaptability. However, the precision could be improved further. In order to study the factors influencing the precision of flow measurement and then the way how to improve the precision of ultrasonic transit-time flow meter, a specific experiment system was designed. In this system, the water supply, flow stability, flume construction and tailwater dealing were all targetedly designed. The results showed: the flowrate could be as large as 3600m3/h and the water level could get up to 0.93m. The inflow was stable, and could supply stable and uniform flow conditions for flowrate measuring by ultrasonic flowmeter. Besides, the relative errors of flow measurements by ultrasonic flowmeter in open channels fell below 1.5% relative to the standard values. In a word, the experimental system could fulfill the requirement of ultrasonic transit-time flowmeter's testing in open channels. In addition, it will also be a good testing platform for other types of flowmeters.
