Abstract: The estimation of river flows without registration requires gauging, which represents specific measurements and requires the use of equipment and qualified personnel. The use of the Manning-Strickler equation to estimate discharges emerges as an alternative but with high uncertainty, a consequence in most cases of an inadequate estimation of the Manning-Strickler coefficient. The study shown presents the results in the estimation of an empirical equation for the estimation of flows in rivers with armored beds. For this purpose, four armored bed rivers of the Peruvian coast with a total of 12 measurement sections were selected, where the geometry of the section, slope and flows were measured. Bearing in mind that, in rivers with armored beds, the roughness coefficient "n" is independent of the granulometry and can be estimated based on the hydraulic radius "R" and the slope of the bed "S"; and, assuming that the hydraulic radius "R" depends on the area "A", the Manning-Strickler equation simplifies to an equation where the discharge depends only on the area and the bottom slope. Based on this theoretical analysis, the model was built, finding a correlation over 0.98 between the simulated flows and the measured flows, concluding that the found model can be applied to estimate flows in natural channels with armored beds and within the range of evaluated slopes.
