Abstract: The flow properties and energy dissipation is investigated on a large laboratory model of 8 steps, with 1.2 m width and 27.5º slope (1V: 2H), for several flow rates and types of step roughness. To exploit the benefits of a Design of Experiments (DOE) approach and to perform a parameter optimization, the effect of each parameter as well as their interactions is determined, to reduce the number of parameters by choosing the most effective ones, using a systematic set of configurations. Bubble Image Velocimetry (BIV) technique is used to obtain the flow pattern under the different given circumstances in skimming flow. The results show that the embedded roughness on steps may change the flow pattern, namely the size and location of the recirculation and mixing zones, measured on a two successive steps. Consequently, it has been found that the smaller recirculation and larger mixing zones result in higher energy dissipation rate. However, the energy dissipation rate dose not varies significantly due to the tested roughness.
