Abstract:
Interbasin water transfers have supported the development and growth of many areas with limited water resources. These have been areas whose growth was inhibited by the lack of water, but they were favored by conditions such as the proximity to various natural resources, attractive climate, ideal location for trade, and historic, cultural and other forces. For example, the growth of many major metropolitan areas around the world has been made possible by water transfers from distant sources.
There are many interbasin transfer projects around the world moving large olumes of water over long distances. The total global capacity of such projects is estimated to hundreds of billion cubic meters per year.
