Abstract:
The transferred water resources in Spain represent a small fraction of the total water resources consumed in the country, however they hold strategic significance. Important Spanish cities and urban and industrial areas have their guaranteed water supply thanks to water transfers. Furthermore certain regions, where irrigation plays a fundamental role in their socioeconomic foundation, depend on the water resources transferred from other basins. This article briefly describes the main existing interbasin water transfers in Spain, with the Tajo-Segura water transfer standing out for its scope and impact.
