Abstract: Reservoir management in Hungary should be considered as a multi-criteria decision problem, where a best compromise solution for satisfying the needs of water users, flood control, ecology, and recreation has to be searched for. Rainfall-runoff models help in evaluating quantitatively the impacts of reservoirs in relation to these needs. A model-based case study from Hungary has demonstrated that constructing new reservoirs has the potential to improve flood control, water supply, and ecological conditions in the basin while providing satisfactory conditions for recreation in these water bodies. These preliminary results will form the basis for more comprehensive model studies, the results of which will be suitable for supporting planning and decision-making.
