Abstract: Sustainable development is an important part of the future and hydraulic structures can play an essential role in this future. This discussion of incorporating sustainability into hydraulic design throughout a project’s life cycle uses the Envision framework for discussion purposes, however the principles presented can be applied outside of this framework. Envision, a third- party verification program maintained by the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure, is a process that provides a structured approach to applying sustainability principles to infrastructure projects. Envision groups sustainability principles into five general categories.
