Abstract: A mechanical breakup is the breakup of a relatively competent ice cover before the thermal meltout. The potential and severity of jamming and flooding associated with a mechanical breakup are strongly related to the discharge of the spring freshet and the state of the ice cover at the breakup time. Since the weather during the breakup time often changes rapidly, forecasting in a Nowcasting mode for possible river ice breakup and ice jam flooding is needed for flood warnings and emergency operations. This paper discusses a physically based method for rapidly forecasting ice cover breakup and ice jam flooding and apply to the lower Mohawk River.
