Abstract: In recent years, the development of Arctic sea routes has become increasingly important due to climate change and a decrease in glacial area. Therefore, sea ice parameters are emerging as an important factor to consider. The present study, an algorithm for calculating ice parameters using images from the KRISO ice water tank. Taking advantage of OpenCV's image processing capabilities, the algorithm was developed, which included comparing various edge detection and preprocessing methods. To develop the algorithm, various edge detection methods were compared. Various preprocessing methods were compared to improve edge detection accuracy. Morphological expansion separated ice segments, and contours were extracted. The ice cusp depth was calculated through the points where the extracted contour meets a line parallel to the bow angle, and the ice breaking length was calculated through the points where the contour meets a line parallel to the ship's operating direction. Through this, an algorithm was developed to obtain ice parameters for each ice segment during the icebreaking process.
