Abstract: In order to replicate the typical action scenarios of a crushed ice and plate structure, investigate the interaction characteristics of crushed ice under plate-crushed ice action, and determine their influence on the plate, a Non-Smooth Discrete Element Method was implemented, while a plate was selected as the research object. The resistance of flat plates with different inclination angles and different speeds when sailing in different concentration of crushed ice is calculated and the movement characteristics of the crushed ice are analyzed. Three movement modes of accumulation, sliding, and overturning are proposed. It is concluded that the resistance of the plate and movement mode of the crushed ice are most affected by the inclination angle of the plate, and the increase of crushed ice concentration will strengthen all movement modes. In the case of high concentration of crushed ice and high plate inclination angle, the resistance will increase sharply due to the combination of the accumulation of crushed ice, carrying ice along, and the “force chain” of the crushed ice. The research work can provide a reference for the design of structures in crushed ice areas.
