Abstract: To study the characteristics of inner structure of ice, the natural ice was sampled in the Ulansuhai Lake. The ice samples were then scanned using a X-CT with a resolution of 0.19 mm, and the ice density and crystal structure of ice were measured. The ice was columnar ice, and had a mean CT value of −85 ~ −65 HU in general along ice depth. The pores in the freshwater ice were mainly gas bubbles. The inner structures in ice were divided into isolated bubbles with CT value of −250 ~ −200 HU and assembled microbubbles with CT value of −130 ~ −110 HU. The isolated bubbles had diameters of 1 ~ 2 mm, and the microbubbles had diameters of less than 0.19 mm. Because the bubble sizes were less than the thickness of the volume units of the x-CT (3 mm), and ice was always involved into the volume units; therefore, the CT values of gas bubbles were higher than the theoretical CT value of air (−1000 HU). Based on the thresholds of CT value of pores in ice, the three-dimensional structure of the ice was exhibited to show the variation of ice inner structure along ice depth.
