Abstract: We present a real-time river ice monitoring system for River Kiiminkijoki in Northern Finland as part of the CRYO-RI project at the University of Oulu. The project aims to monitor ice thickness, formation, and melting by incorporating sensors to collect hydrometeorological data. Additionally, cameras are planned to strategically be placed at five locations along the river. This project addresses the disadvantages of using remote sensing imagery in cases where the river is narrower than the spatial resolution of available datasets by collecting ground-based data. On the other hand, optical satellite imagery faces challenges with cloud cover, so in the higher latitude regions, RS data scarcity is an issue. The objectives include monitoring river ice processes and modeling the ice formation-melting based on meteorological data obtained from sensors and verification by the camera output. The study area, River Kiiminkijoki, experiences ice formation during winters, offering an ideal case for comprehensive monitoring and modeling. The river, characterized by varying water flow and channel morphology, spans 160 km, and the project aims to cover 70 km of the downstream part. The monitoring system involves cameras with advanced imaging capabilities and a sensor network measuring various meteorological parameters. Data acquisition, likely employing LoRa or cellular data transmission, enables real-time processing and transmission to a centralized database. This system provides the collected data being used in river ice dynamics studies, aiding in risk assessment and impact evaluation during cold seasons.
