Abstract:
Ice ridges pose a significant threat to ships and offshore structures, as they frequently dictate and influence the design loads. In this study, the authors propose a three-dimensional discrete element model (DEM) to construct numerical ice ridges, considering the consolidated layer. A dilated polyhedron-based DEM (DPDEM) is adopted to simulate the interaction between sea ice ridges and ships, wherein the contact force and bond-failure criterion are considered for the collision and fracture of sea ice, respectively. The proposed method investigates the resistance characteristics of a ship penetrating a sea ice ridge from a level ice. To analyze the impact of consolidated ridges on the resistance of an icebreaker when penetrating an ice ridge, we employed an unconsolidated ice ridge of the same size as a control. This allowed us to examine the influence of the consolidated layer on the resistance of the ship to penetrating the ridge and explore the relationship between ship resistance in unconsolidated ice ridges and icebreaking resistance in level ice.
