Abstract:

For the problem of assessing the structural safety for polar ships under ice loads, the thesis establishes a set of structural failure risk analysis method via probabilistic analysis. Based on the measured data of Arctic scientific expeditions, a joint probability distribution consisting of sea ice thickness and ship speed is established for typical polar navigation cases. The structural ice loads are determined by the discrete element method (DEM). A fatigue life assessment method by the S-N curve is established. The first order second moment (FOSM) is applied for fatigue reliability. Meanwhile the structural failure probability of ultimate strength was obtained. Finally, the risk of structural failure is calculated using the risk matrix approach. The method provides a preliminary exploration of the risk management framework for polar ship structures.
