Abstract:

A rarely considered issue in the public debate is management of river systems together with riparian and floodplain areas as potential sinks and sources of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and as key components of the global carbon cycle. This is a very specific topic that requires multidisciplinary expertise in the hydro sciences, chemistry, and ecology. It also offers opportunities for hydraulic engineering to rethink river restoration work projects based on the ‘room to the rivers’ concept as climate change mitigation measures in view of the carbon sink potential of riparian areas.
