Abstract:

In many countries of the northern hemisphere on inland waters in winter appears ice, which causes essential changes in hydraulic, physical, chemical and ecological conditions. Appearance of ice on inland waters results also in numerous engineering problems due to ice jam floods, in the sphere of hydro-energy, water transport or operation of hydraulic structures. Gdansk and the Lower Vistula were very often in the past influenced by ice conditions, which lead even to substantial changes in the layout of river channels. This required numerous studies and programs connected with ice phenomena. The aim of this presentation is to describe various engineering situations caused by ice phenomena, measures to diminish such events in future, extensive filed measurements of ice forms and hydraulic conditions with the presence of ice cover and mathe- matical modeling for estimating future hydraulic conditions caused by ice cover. It is worth to mention that International Ice Symposium is organized for the second time in Gdansk. The first was in 2000.
