Abstract: Fish might encounter situations where swimming near the air-water interface cannot be avoided, such as in shallow rivers or in fish passes at dams. In these scenarios, the interaction between the fish body and the free surface can generate surface disturbances of varying amplitude, significantly influencing the hydrodynamic resistance experienced by the fish. Previous studies conducted on fish-like objects in towing tanks have demonstrated that this phenomenon, known as wave-drag, can increase the total mean drag force by up to 5 times. Despite its relevance to fishway design, our understanding of the contribution of wave-drag to the total drag experienced by fish remains nevertheless limited. The aim of this study is to explore the effects of the air-water interface on the drag force experienced by fish-shaped bodies in turbulent open-channel flow.
