Abstract: In river beds composed of coarse grains (gravel) with low availability of fine sediments, sediment ribbons have been often observed to develop due to lateral bed sorting induced by secondary flows (e. g., Culbertson, 1967). They differ from sediment ribbons over uniform fine-sediment beds by the presence of fine sediments over the ridges and coarse grains over the troughs inducing lateral variations in bed roughness. While these variations have been studied on completely immobile beds with a focus on secondary flows (e. g., Stoesser, 2015), the coupling with the morphological evolution of ribbons remains unexplored (Trevisson, 2022). To this end, the morphodynamics of sediment ribbons in a coarse-grained bed were investigated in a laboratory flume via topographic and PIV measurements.
