Abstract: Sediment transport controls the morphological process in rivers, estuaries, and costal oceans. It is, by nature, a two-phase problems involving fluid-particle and particle-particle interactions covering the full range of particle concentration. In intense sediment transport, the bed shear stress caused by the flowing water is strong enough to erode the bedforms and mobilize the thick and dense layer of particles at the top of the sediment bed. This is a commonly observed phenomenon in rivers, or at sandy beaches. In these hydraulic systems, the flow regime is fully turbulent. Both the dynamics of the sediments and the properties of the turbulent flows could be affected by sediment-turbulent and particle-particle interactions. The term "four-way coupling" describes the intricate interactions between turbulence and granular processes, wherein fluid turbulence is modified due to granular interactions and vice versa.
