Abstract: Infiltration and accumulation of fine sediments – riverbed clogging – represents a severe impact on vertical connectivity and hence on interstitial habitats and hyporheic exchange processes. This study investigates functional relationships between a novel field approach to assess riverbed clogging (MultiPAC) and the classical assessment according to the Water Frame Directive (WFD), catchment characteristics and biological data. The resulting unique dataset with subsequent statistical analyses provides promising results toward a quantitative evaluation concept of riverbed clogging.
