Abstract: Recently there has been increased interest in colloidal contamination of groundwater systems because of the emergence of micro and nano plastics and carbon nanotubes as contaminants of interest. These contaminants pose a direct threat to ecosystem health and have the potential to remobilise organic contaminants. Models of colloidal transport facilitate the understanding of the source and extent of historical contamination and enable the design of systems to reduce or prevent future contamination of groundwater systems. The transport of colloids in porous media is modelled using a modified form of the reaction diffusion advection equation (RDAE) with the inclusion of kinetic sites for attachment and detachment of colloids at collector sites. Several of the parameters in this equation cannot be measured directly and as such must be estimated using an inversion algorithm.
