Abstract: Characterizing width and depth of the active portion of a gravel braidplain, is still an open problem due to scour and fill of the gravel bed during floods. In the present study SAR satellite images are used to identify wet and active widths, as well as the number of active channels. Active width is here defined as the width of the portion of the braidplain where most of sediment transport occurs. The proposed procedure can be useful for bedload transport calculations and predictions of river morphology.
