Abstract: It is widely recognized that the physics of meandering flows and processes can best be explored by invoking idealized streams (or ‘models’) when conducting both experimental and numerical studies. This work deals with the question of how to idealize the geometry of meandering streams, and more specifically on how to generate idealized and yet realistic meandering beds for streams whose channel centerlines follow sine-generated curves. A numerical model is developed to create realistic beds on the basis of established geometric characteristics of deformed beds. The performance of the model is assessed by applying it to the experimental results by various authors, and involving channels with varying sinuosity. The results illustrate that the deformed beds generated by the present model are in satisfactory agreement with the real beds.
