Abstract: The 300 MW Balakot project is a run-of-river hydropower scheme to be situated on the Kunhar River within the picturesque Kaghan Valley, Mansehra district, nestled in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of the Pakistani Himalayas. As an integral part of Pakistan's shift towards renewable energy initiatives, the project intends to bolster the region's energy capacity, anticipating the expected rise in energy demand, taking advantage of the abundant local hydropower resources in a sustainable and economically efficient manner. This paper aims to outline the essential components of project while highlighting the challenges faced by AQUALOGUS due to difficult geological, seismic and sediment transport characteristics of the site.
