Abstract: This paper focus on the challenges of allocating water resources and operating the large Gove reservoir in Angola, to guarantee the multiple existing uses in the international Cunene basin, in the context of the changing technical, economic, environmental, and social conditions in the region, during almost 50 years of operation from the date of entry in service in 1975. A description is given of the rehabilitation works of the dam executed between 2008 and 2012, due to the damage that occurred in 1986 and in 1990, and the construction of the hydropower plant. The operation of the reservoir before, during and after rehabilitation, and the compliance to the water resources sharing agreement between Angola and Namibia, are presented. Future perspectives for the operation of the reservoir, at medium and long term, are also given, associated to the increase of water needs, climate change, addition of solar PV, new planned storage reservoirs and hydropower plants downstream.
