Abstract: The passage of hurricane Lorenzo through the Azores archipelago, in October 2019, caused serious damage to the Port of Lajes das Flores, in Flores Island, which is the island’s only commercial port where goods, essential to its population, enter and leave by sea, severely restricting its operations. For this reason, it is both justified and expected a special sensibility with this from the political decision-makers, since the non-operation of this port for days, or even weeks, has serious social and economic impacts in the populations of Flores and Corvo islands, not only in the imports of essential goods and other things, but also in the exports of goods produced there. In order to solve this problem, a lot of resources have been mobilized to Flores Island, expected to be financed by community funds and also by regional funds through a program contract, not only for the chartering of ships and complementary support measures for the populations and companies, but essentially to carry out a series of emergency works to allow the facilities that were still operational to be used. Among those works were several urgent cleaning and clearing operations, as well as the contracts “Protecao de Emergencia ao terrapleno e cais a -5m (ZH)” (Emergency protection of the embankment and quay at -5m (ZH) ) and “Empreitada de Construcao de Ponte-Cais” (Jetty construction contract), concluded in June 2023 and January 2023, respectively.
