Abstract: Climate change and growing urbanization represent two of the main challenges facing the world. The climate change leads to an intensification of extreme rainfall events, and the urbanization changes natural or agricultural land uses to residential, commercial, and industrial areas with an increase in impervious surfaces. Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDSs) offer a sustainable approach for managing stormwater in urban areas by mimicking natural hydrological processes and reducing the negative impacts of urbanization. This paper examines the role of green roofs and permeable pavements installations in an urban catchment casestudy as a strategic and sustainable response to mitigate the increasing urbanization. Green roofs and permeable pavements efficiency is assessed by varying the Effective Impervious Area (EIA) reduction. The reduction of choking occurrence in the sewer pipes and structures downstream from the SuDS-retrofitted lot is evaluated. To this end, numerical simulations are carried out by using the software Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and different retrofitted scenarios are supposed. Preliminary results confirm the positive impact of the analyzed SuDS in reducing the effect of the growing urbanization on the occurrence of the pressurization phenomena into the drainage system.
