Abstract: Throughout a 5-year research project, the team of SEE-URBAN-WATER investigated the promotion and implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in urban watersheds. By taking the greater metropolitan area of San Jose, Costa Rica, and a highly urbanized watershed within the area as a case study, the research activities focused on three interrelated domains: (1) Spatial integration and governance, (2) Co-design and prototyping in a Real-World Lab, and (3) Modelling and multifunctional scenario analysis. The multidisciplinary methodological interlinkage of the three domains enabled for a holistic analysis of difficulties and opportunities for an effective promotion and implementation of multifunctional NbS in urban settings. It considers a multi-spatial scales (from building level to a larger metropolitan area) approach and multi-level actor involvement in the promotion, design, implementation, and upscaling process.
