Abstract: In large-scale stormwater drainage systems and water diversion projects, rapid flow transitions frequently occur due to heavy rainfall or large upstream inflow. This flow regime is characterized by long distance air pockets being compressed by the forward water flow at first, and in succession with irregular intermittent flow regime transitions. On account of the multiple vertical shaft arrangements, these pipeline systems also have multi-shaft air release problems. These complex flows pose a huge threat to the safe operation of pipeline systems, which is a strong motivation for the development of mixed flow models.
