Abstract: It is of paramount importance to shed light on dike failure studies because although these fail frequently and cause severe impacts in protected and urbanized areas, they are still at an early stage of research. This was the motivation for the experimental research on failure of fluvial dikes currently being developed at the Portuguese National Laboratory for Civil Engineering. A medium-scale facility entirely designed for the purpose was used to perform the experiments presented in this study. A set of three experiments is presented in which the soil composition and the inflow conditions were varied. Conclusions regarding the impact of the inflow conditions and soil composition on the dike’s failure processes are drawn.
