Abstract: The planned decommissioning and recultivation of former opencast lignite mines often leads to the creation of artificial lakes with a wide range of potential uses (e. g. tourism, water management). The slopes of these mining pit lakes must permanently withstand the impact of wind-induced waves both during the filling phase and after reaching the target water level. In this context, physical model tests were conducted in which morphological changes at steep slopes due to wave impact were investigated for different soil materials and scenarios. It could be shown that the final morphology of wave-impacted slopes varies significantly, primarily depending on the cohesive properties of the soil type. Based on these findings, the most suitable material to be used as cover layer for pit lake slopes can be determined.
