Abstract: This abstract presents the first results of an ongoing investigation focusing on local scour beneath partially buried pipelines perpendicular to the flow direction. The work addresses an important gap in the literature, which is the fact that at present only one method is available to predict equilibrium scour depth under such conditions. On the basis of two long-duration experiments carried out in a 21 m long, 0.76 m wide, and 0.50 m deep flume, it is concluded that this method underestimates scour by roughly three times when the pipes are partially buried, highlighting the need for further experimental and numerical studies on the topic.
