Abstract: The present work describes the fully developed open-channel flow over an array of freshwater mussels partially buried in a gravel bed. In the present numerical experiment, the density of the musselbed (i. e., the number of shells per unit area) is 300 mussels/m2, and filtering activity of the mussels is also accounted for. Comparisons with the corresponding simulation without mussels shows that the presence of mussels alters the flow field and the turbulence structure significantly.
