Abstract: Indonesia is home to 133 river basins with extensive hydraulic structures that are vital for its economic and social development. However, population growth and economic expansion have sharply increased the water demand, creating an urgent need for more hydraulic infrastructure in rivers. While there are government plans to secure future water storage and energy supplies through new constructions of weirs and dams, this approach raises concerns about long-term environmental sustainability and community impacts. Furthermore, the lack of holistic assessment and design guidelines has often led to hydraulic structure designs that had long-term negative environmental and social consequences. This paper analyses the current weir design practices in Indonesia and the improvements that can be made using low-impact weirs. Low-impact weirs offer a solution that could provide a more sustainable way forward for new developments of hydraulic structures in Indonesia and worldwide.
