Abstract: The Mekong Delta in Vietnam (MKD) could face severe threats from flooding by 2050. In this context, the need to construct large storm surge barriers in the Mekong Delta has recently become a highly debated topic. The main concern typically centers on these structures' potential hydrodynamic and morphological effects on the estuary region. A numerical model of the Ham Luong estuary was constructed in Delft3D to obtain more insight. The model was calibrated and validated using the measured data. This study describes the setup and introduces some initial results of the numerical models. The modeling approach employs a two-tier system: a large-scale model and a smaller, nested model. The large-scale model covers a wide area, capturing overall hydrodynamic patterns. The smaller, nested model focuses on the central region of interest, allowing for a more detailed analysis of the dynamics of the Ham Luong estuary.
