Abstract: Measuring sediment accumulation in urban drainage systems remains a challenge. Existing options include inspection campaigns or sensors with high installation and maintenance costs. This study presents MONTSE, a system for estimating sediment accumulation using temperature measurements and analysis of heat transfer processes in urban drainage systems. The proposed system estimates sediment thickness from temperature differences in the water layer and the bottom of the sediment layer. To obtain satisfactory estimations from thermal analysis, a heat-pulse method has also been developed to characterize the sediment thermal properties. Results suggest that sediment depths can be estimated with average errors of less than 1 cm. This accuracy illustrates the potential of low-cost sensor-based temperature measurements for sediment monitoring in urban drainage systems to optimize inspection and cleaning strategies.
