Abstract: Climate Change is increasing the risk of Urban Flooding. Green Roofs (GR) are recognized as an efficient nature-based solution for mitigating Flood Risks (FR). This study aims to analyze the role of GR in influencing the urban flood risk in Milan from a risk-based and cost-benefit perspective. The research lays its foundations by stimulating an extreme flooding event using the CN method, which computes the flood depth based on land use and hydrological soil group data. Following the simulation, GRs are implemented by adjusting the CN values for enhanced surface permeability. The results show a reduction in water depth, indicating that GR can mitigate urban flooding. The study serves as a precursor to a cost-benefit analysis, where implementing the GR is the cost, whereas reduced FR is the primary benefit. Future work will assess the overall impact of GR on FR in Milan, considering exposure and vulnerability.
