Abstract: The present study investigates the planform evolution of an initially straight channel with erodible banks made of heterogeneous non-cohesive sediment by means of numerical simulations. A bank erosion model with a stretchable grid is tested against experiments from the literature to evaluate its performance. Two equations of sediment transport were employed in the simulations (Ashida & Michie and Egashira et al. ). The results of the simulations were agreeable with the experiments in terms of bed elevation changes and bankline evolution, and the spatial distribution of sediment size varied with the planform of the channel. Coarser sediment was observed near the banks in areas where the channel was straight; and during the formation of the meandering bends, fine sediment was deposited in the inner part of the bends while coarser sediment was observed in the outer part of the bends. The sediment sorting was congruent with the planform changes observed in the channel.
