Abstract: The effective use of floodplains and polders is of great practical significance to improve the river basin flood control system and enhance the river basin flood control and management capacity. In this paper, a hierarchical operation scheme for floodplains and polders in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River is put forward, based on the current operation regulations, as well as the classification results of floodplains and polders and the changes of the control water level. The typical floods in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in 1954,1983,1998,2016,2017 and 2020 are selected to analyze the flood control effect of the hierarchical operation scheme on the important control stations. The results show that the hierarchical operation scheme of floodplains and polders can effectively reduce the excess flood volume and the maximum water level of the river.
