Abstract: Landslide and debris flow are complex with multi-phase and multi-scale characteristics. The triggering of landslide is often dictated by the localized deformation within narrow shear band. Debris flow often shows both solid-like and fluid-like behaviours. The numerical simulation of such complex processes poses formidable challenge for the numerical simulations. We present some numerical results based on the finite element method in micropolar continuum to handle the shear band formation in slope failures. For debris flow we present some numerical results based on smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Some centrifuge model tests are carried out to validate the numerical simulations. Moreover, a well-documented landslide is considered as a real-world problem. The numerical results are compared with the observations.
