Abstract: The noise generated by high dam flood discharge has a long duration and wide transmission range, potentially affecting the work and life of nearby residents. This issue has received increasing attention in recent years. This study focuses on the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station, conducting prototype observations and hydraulic model tests to investigate the environmental noise impacts of high dam flood discharge. Based on the characteristics of dam discharge noise, the flood discharge sound sources were categorized into point, line, and surface sources, and a flood discharge sound field model was constructed. The operation of spillway is strongly correlated with the noise generated. Source analysis based on the sound field model indicates that, under various conditions, the main noise source is the rolling of the surface water in the stilling basin caused by the surface spillway flows and middle spillway flows entering the stilling basin, while the secondary noise source is the local eddies caused by the jets entering the water. Under the same discharge conditions, the total noise power generated by surface spillways discharge is significantly greater than that of middle spillways discharge.
