Abstract: Water is becoming more and more important as a result of the growing demand for various purposes such as water supply, irrigation, navigation, hydropower generation etc. Hydropower is a clean and renewable source of energy with great market prospects. China is a country having the richest hydropower resources in the world. Reservoirs are one of the most efficient measures for the integrated water resources management in China. A single hydropower station in the power grid is lack of competitiveness, especially performing weakly in water regulation. Joint operation of a group of hydropower stations as a whole can manifest the advantages of hydropower. More and more reservoirs join this operation mode. However, there is some unreasonable effectiveness in the distribution mechanism for joint operation of cascade reservoirs. The Shapley value method of game theory was used for the benefits distribution of reservoir system in this study. The Three Gorges and Qingjiang cascade reservoirs were selected as case study. The result showed that this method is viable in practical operation. The compensation of good regulating performance of reservoirs in the system was considered. A fair and reasonable distribution was proposed for the reservoirs in active cooperation.
